Continuing Education

Continued education is not only important to stay ahead of the curve but is also mandatory for license renewals. To renew your license you must prove that you completed at least 24 hours of learning during the current license period. Newly licensed architects do not need to meet this requirement until their first full two-year license. Check out some opportunities for continuing education below!
AIA Member Education Requirements

For AIA members, your annual requirement for AIA is to complete 18 hours of continuing education each calendar year, and 12 of those hours must be in HSW topics. These hours must be shown on your AIA transcript, which can be accessed at www.aia.org >>> log in.

Don’t forget to self-report learning gained from providers other than an AIA Continuing Education Provider. Do that through your AIA record. Sexual harassment prevention training can be self-reported, for example.

Associate AIA members are encouraged to meet this annual requirement, but it is not mandatory. Emeritus AIA members are required to complete one hour of learning.

New AIA members do not need to meet this requirement until their first full year of membership but are encouraged to start participating now.

AIA Illinois is a registered provider of AIA-approved continuing education under Provider Number A129. All registered AIA CES Providers must comply with the AIA Standards for Continuing Education Programs. Any questions or concerns about this provider or their learning programs may be sent to AIA CES (cessupport@aia.org or (800) AIA 3837, Option 3).

EP Friendly Firms

We’ve compiled a list of firms in Illinois championing an “EP Friendly” ethos in their policies, practices, and procedures. These firms undergo evaluation based on survey responses, with those surpassing the established threshold being recognized as EP Friendly Firms, fostering a supportive environment for emerging professionals within the architectural community.

Annual Sexual Harassment Training

In the year 2020, a new law set by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation came into effect, ushering in a vital requirement for sexual harassment training for licensure renewal under the Civil Administrative Code. Though this mandate does not increase Continuing Education hours, it stands as a significant component of Mandatory Continuing Education hours.

Also, all Illinois employers are obligated to offer annual sexual harassment prevention training to their employees, encompassing all workers within the state. Employers must either create a customized training program that aligns with or surpasses the minimum standards delineated in Section 2-109(8) of the Illinois Human Rights Act (IHRA), or utilize the comprehensive model training provided by the Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) to meet this essential obligation.
