Wondering how to help a 3rd grader understand how buildings stand up?  Puzzled about what vocab and materials are needed to explain scale to a 5th grader?  Curious about how to get an 8th grader excited about sketching?  CAF and the CIC are hosting a hands-on training session over two evenings designed to help AIA members prepare to work with local elementary school students and teachers.

The Community Interface Committee (CIC) of AIA Chicago is partnering with the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) during the 2011 – 2012 school year for a series of ‘Architects in the Schools’ visits to Chicago area 3rd – 8th grade classrooms. (Visits scheduled to begin in fall 2011; the number of visits is up to you.)

Join the Community Interface Committee and UrbanWorks, Ltd. to tour their most recent competition winning project – the United Neighborhood Organization’s Veterans Memorial Charter School Campus.  This project achieves design excellence transforming an existing industrial concrete and brick structure into two major uses: educational and community facilities.  Unique, innovative design strategies were utilized to achieve LEED Gold Certification including solar thermal panels and daylighting strategies.  The incorporation of an extensive green roof contributed to the project obtaining first place in 2009 for Mayor Daley’s Landscape Award and provides pleasant outdoor spaces.

Architects have a responsibility to improve peoples’ lives.  Connecting to our communities informs and enriches our work, thus increasing our ability to fulfill that responsibility. Founded in 2009, the Cannon Design Open Hand Studio fulfills our commitment to socially responsible design, considered as an integral aspect of our practice. Open Hand Studio works through the built environment to better connect with and serve our communities. This Open Hand Studio tour will share how Cannon Design approaches pro bono work and will provide first-hand feedback on the impacts of the firm’s efforts in Chicago and across its other offices.
